Air distance, or "as the crow flies" distance, is the shortest straight-line path between two points on the Earth's surface, calculated along the great circle (the curvature of the Earth). It differs from driving distance, which follows roads and can be significantly longer.
A great circle route is the shortest path between two points on a sphere — it curves when projected onto a flat map. A rhumb line (loxodrome) maintains a constant compass bearing and appears as a straight line on a Mercator map, but is longer than the great circle. Pilots and airlines use great-circle routes for efficiency.
Our flight duration time estimate is based on a typical commercial aircraft cruising speed of approximately 900 km/h (560 mph), with an additional 30 minutes for taxi, takeoff, and landing. Actual flight duration times vary due to wind conditions, air traffic, and routing. Always check with your airline for actual schedules.
Our estimates use the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator methodology (~195g CO₂/km/passenger in economy, including a radiative forcing multiplier of approximately 2×). Business class uses roughly 2.5× more emissions per seat, and first class approximately 4× more, due to the larger cabin space allocated per passenger. Actual emissions vary by aircraft type, load factor, and routing.
